Ok, so now I take on the main part of the city. There are some physical technical issues that I have to overcome. The table needs to come apart into 18 pieces of 2'x4' for transportation and storage. I hope that if this project gets finished it will be used later somehow.
If you go back to the start of the Blog you will see how the table is constructed. The lines cut through the city and literally hundreds of buildings would have to be cut somehow and the whole table would never line up. Soooooo.....
To overcome this, the neighborhoods cannot be attached to the table. I am instead going to create the roads and neighborhoods on top of 1/4" MDF that is removable from the table. So the lines can cut wherever they want and I dont have to care.
Underneath the MDF will be foam contoured to create the elevations and slopes. This is where another major technical complication comes in. Most of the MDF boards in the city will be sloped to one degree or another. Well, houses do not slope with the landscape, they stand perpendicular to level. So, every foundation is going to have to be custom designed to slope with the landscape. Go me!! Yes, yes I am insane.
This will have an added value however. It will give the city various elevations so the houses are tiered and will be visually much more attractive. Well, if I can pull it off :]
Pics of the MDF with a coat of beige primer paint on one side. I am going to coat both sides first and then figure out how to add dirt/grass/road on top. Cut lines are going to be along major roads and in pieces big enough to handle but small enough to deal with the elevations properly.
Oh, and just for shits and giggles the map has significant irregularities. There is about a half inch of map missing between those 2 pieces. I will have to re-create it from different maps. And there are other places where it overlaps by 1/2 inch and places where the rollers seemed to not keep the paper square so it lines up on one side but not on the other. Fun fun fun fun fun!!!
Going to have to work from the southeast corner of the dock ward across the docks and then northwards to keep the map as close to proportional as possible but most of it has the possibility of moving an inch or so. Going to use the mountain on the west
as a buffer as I can customize the thickness and adjust accordingly depending on where things actually end up.
Did I mention lighting? Oh yeah, it has GOT to have lighting. I need to get the lighthouse up soon before some of those wraiths get loose from Umberlee's cache :P
