Ok, so things are coming together. I think that the elevation map is completed with the exception of Mount Waterdeep which I still have to figure out. However, that is something I have plenty of time to concentrate on later. The wood and foam blocks on the map represent the actual level of the grade at their position. Per the descriptions of Waterdeep the city rises along the east edge and flattens around the center of the map. I have created drainage along the southeast end in the green area. The actual map is going to be designed with a foam underlayment cut to meet the elevations. On top of this will be a piece of 1/4" chip board which will be cut in the shape of the neighborhoods in a way to allow them to be removed. This eliminates most issues with the table needing to be modular as the breaks can be along the streets rather than vertical and horizontal through the map. It also allows for sections to be updated to show damage or more detail.
LED lighting can be mostly limited to non-detachable sections of the map. I want to cut the sewers into the foam under the 1/4" chip board to finish off the diorama.
