If I wanted easy I could have done Greyhawk... *sigh*
(all dimensions are relative to sea level and scale height/distance on the map)
For those unfamiliar the area around Mount Waterdeep containing the city depicted is approximately 2 miles long and just under a mile wide. The pinnacle of Mt. Waterdeep is 700' above sea level (14" above the tabletop) . The mountainous terrain along with the harbors and cliffs on both sides, one a sea cliff and the other a land cliff are going to make the terrain quite a challenge in addition to the fact that I want all of the neighborhoods to be removable requiring them to be on 1/4" chip board that has to be level. Yes, yes I am completely insane but it is better than bingeing netflix for eternity... The east coast has to rise quickly to 80-100' and be shaped as to be not climable especially around the unwalled area to the northeast section of the map. Along the north edge a relatively gentle slope from +100' to +60' at the troll wall sloping again down to maybe +10 - 20' along the northern skirt. Along the northwest coast there seems to be little elevation in the top 1/4 with the mountain quickly bringing that to +80' This transition is going to be interesting. I think the north end of the board will slope downwards toward the sea at as gentle a grade as I can manage with it flattening out and rising near Piergeron's palace and then dropping down to about 50' at the base of the wall just southwest of the approach to Castle Waterdeep. From this point a path will lead to the castle that will be 120' above the city at +170' above sea level. From there the tallest tower will be the wizards tower at another 280' bringing it to +450' at it's highest point (9" off the tabletop). The green space on the southeast of the city will be graded for drainage overflow during heavy rains and thus unused for housing. Smuggler's cove will start out at about 12' at the chain gates, rise to 60' in a cliff wall then abruptly drop back down to 12.5' at the docks nearby. Along the dock front the height will start at 12.5' and rise to 25' at the center commercial portion. All sections of dock will then slope upwards to the north. I am using big square blocks cut to the height of the elevation so I can start to understand what the underlying structure is going to look like. Sort of trying to "slice" it right now.
